Comedian Shane Gillis Criticized for Remarks About Women at Gym
Commentator Jana Hocking argues that comedian Shane Gillis's recent jokes about women's gym attire reveal underlying misogyny, sparking debate and drawing support for a critical response from actor Dan Levy.
Commentator Jana Hocking has sharply criticized comedian Shane Gillis for his recent remarks about women's attire at the gym, suggesting his jokes reveal a deeper animosity towards women. Hocking's commentary, published by Daily Mail Australia, asserts that Gillis's humor, particularly his comments during a recent Saturday Night Live monologue, crosses the line from comedy into denigration.
Gillis's monologue included observations about women's gym shorts, which he described in a way Hocking characterized as vulgar. She posits that such jokes are indicative of what she calls 'angry men' who 'punch down' at women, potentially stemming from personal resentments. "Whether it was the fat kid at school who figured out how to save face by making fun of themselves before anyone else could, or the kid who made his weirdness his entire schtick, the reason's baked in," Hocking wrote, questioning Gillis's motivations.
Hocking also referenced Gillis's past, noting his firing from SNL in 2019 after offensive remarks surfaced. She suggested that his cruelty extends to his family, citing instances where he allegedly insulted his own sisters.
The commentary has drawn significant attention, with actor Dan Levy publicly condemning Gillis's remarks. Levy's Instagram post stated, "Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them wes. It makes the men calling them wes misogynists." This sentiment was echoed and praised by numerous celebrities, including Viola Davis and Elizabeth Banks.
In contrast to Gillis's humor, Hocking and others highlighted responses like that of former SNL star Ego Nwodim, who posted a gym photo with the caption, "We reporting for duty." Hocking concluded by suggesting Gillis retire and seek therapy, stating that his "hatred is not our problem and calling us wes won't make it funny."
