Comedian Matt Richardson has reignited a feud with broadcaster Chris Evans, stating that Evans "should retire." The conflict stems from a 2019 radio shake-up at Virgin Radio, which Richardson claims led to him losing his drivetime show.
In a recent TikTok video, Richardson commented on Evans' hosting of a modern revival of the Channel 4 show "TFI Friday Unplugged." He stated, "I've now worked with Chris Evans and I don't condone anything he does, and he should just retire."
Richardson, 35, departed Virgin Radio in July 2019, six months after Evans, 60, joined to host the breakfast show. Matt was replaced by Kate Lawler. Richardson has previously stated that the fallout from losing his job led him to a difficult period, including excessive drinking.
He recalled that his four-year tenure on Drive Time at Virgin Radio was going well until Evans was hired. "Chris came and the whole station changed," Richardson said in a TikTok video earlier this year. "I was doing really well and they really liked me, and overnight they didn't like me."
Richardson also claimed that in their first meeting, Evans told him he had "never met anyone who does stand-up and radio well." He added that he was not simply fired but "managed out" of his contract, with staff repeatedly telling him he was "not good enough."
Richardson's mother reportedly intervened and asked him to remove some of his online posts about the situation. He expressed no animosity towards his replacement, Kate Lawler, with whom he still follows on Instagram and to whom he said he was "delighted to hand the keys over."
Chris Evans has not publicly responded to Richardson's latest comments. Evans rejoined Virgin Radio UK after leaving BBC Radio 2, where he reportedly earns £2 million annually. Evans has a past connection to Virgin Radio, having purchased the station in 1997 and later selling it in 2000. He was previously dismissed from the station in June 2001 after a period of absence from his breakfast show.
In 2023, Evans and his wife Natasha Shishmanian adopted a sober lifestyle following his diagnosis with early-stage skin cancer.
