Outspoken Australian comedian Dave Hughes has claimed that Victoria's new Premier, Ben Carroll, may be closely monitoring his social media activity and echoing his messages. Hughes, 55, made the assertion on the Daily Mail podcast "The Debrief with Savanna Young," suggesting that Carroll's public statements reflect themes Hughes has been promoting online.
Hughes pointed to remarks made by Carroll regarding the respect for taxpayers' money as an example of this perceived influence. "I feel like he's been watching my Instagram," Hughes stated. "He seems to be watching what I say because he's repeating a lot of what I say."
Impact on Former Premier
The comedian further made the extraordinary claim that his vocal criticism of the Victorian government might have played a role in the resignation of former Premier Jacinta Allan in July. Allan stepped down after losing the support of the Labor caucus, despite maintaining she could still win the upcoming state election.
"I think I've made a big difference in Victoria," Hughes declared. "If I hadn't been as vocal as I had, I reckon Jacinta Allan would still be Premier of Victoria. Seriously."
Hughes also cited comments made by Carroll on his first day in office, particularly those emphasizing integrity and leadership. He interpreted these remarks as an implicit criticism of previous administrations. "He said 'I'm not Dan Andrews, I'm not Jacinta Allan... Integrity will not be optional'," Hughes quoted. "Which is saying integrity was optional under those two leaders. It's a big thing to say."
Endorsement of Liberal Party
Despite his observations on the new leadership's rhetoric, Hughes expressed skepticism about the governing party's chances in the upcoming November state election. He announced that he is now fully supporting the Victorian Liberal Party. "I've gone 'all chips in' on the opposition," he said.
Hughes specifically praised Liberal leader Jess Wilson, describing her as "reasonable" and "honest" after attending a Liberal function with her in Geelong. "Jess Wilson is a young woman. She's in the mid 30s. Young mum. I've met her a few times. I've done a function with her down in Geelong," he added. "I think Victoria should give her a go and give the Libs a go this time."
Hughes acknowledged that others might disagree with his assessment of his own influence but maintained that his public commentary has impacted the political landscape. The full interview is available on "The Debrief with Savanna Young" podcast and its associated platforms.
