Columnist Warns of War Risk Amidst Perceived Hypocrisy on Democracy

Columnist Peter Hitchens has voiced concerns that Western leaders' foreign policy is marked by hypocrisy, particularly regarding their approach to democracy and their dealings with China. He argues that this posturing, coupled with an intense focus on Russia and Iran, risks drawing nations into a devastating European war.

Hitchens contends that leaders often espouse democratic values while simultaneously extending courtesies to China. This perceived contradiction, he suggests, fuels tensions and increases the likelihood of military conflict.

"Our leaders spout hypocritical bilge about democracy while rolling out the red carpet for China," Hitchens wrote. "Now their posturing risks dragging us into a European war you will absolutely hate."

He criticizes the prevailing rhetoric that, in his view, is pushing populations toward supporting a conflict characterized by potential rationing, high taxes, and widespread misery. Hitchens asserts that much of what politicians communicate on foreign policy is contradictory and disingenuous, warning that any ensuing war would be deeply unpopular and detrimental for those involved.
