Columnist Warns Military Involvement in Politics Risks Propaganda
Peter Hitchens argues that soldiers should remain in barracks and generals should refrain from public political statements.
Columnist and commentator Peter Hitchens has expressed concern that the military is becoming too involved in political discourse, warning that this trend could lead to the use of soldiers for propaganda purposes.
Hitchens stated that instances such as the Irish Guards acting as "stage props" outside Downing Street and a general's public statements urging citizens to prepare for conflict are indicative of a dangerous drift. He believes that generals should "shut up" and soldiers should remain in their barracks, away from political arenas.
According to Hitchens, any government wishing to advocate for military action should present its case through parliamentary debate. This, he argues, should precede any public push toward conflict, especially one that might be widely unpopular.
