Columbia University Apologizes for 'October 7 Blush Sauce' Error

Columbia University has issued an apology after a pasta sauce labeled "October 7 Blush Sauce" was offered at a campus dining hall on the third anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attacks.

The sauce, appearing on the menu at John Jay Dining Hall alongside marinara, turkey bolognese, and garlic oil, drew immediate criticism after a photo of the menu was shared on social media. Critics expressed outrage, with some interpreting the name as a reference to the October 7, 2023, attacks and a glorification of the violence.

Columbia University stated that the labeling was an "unfortunate mistake" and "not a reference to the events of October 7." In a statement released on X, the university explained, "The date was accidentally left in when the day’s meal information was copied into the menu template." The university confirmed that the signs were removed as soon as the error was identified and apologized for the "concern and confusion" it caused.

However, the explanation did not quell the online backlash, with some critics finding the university's explanation insufficient and demanding accountability.

Amid the controversy, a pro-Palestinian student demonstration organized by Students for Justice in Palestine took place on campus. According to reports, protesters chanted slogans and displayed anti-Israeli messages. The rally occurred even though the student group had been suspended since 2023.

Separately, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks with a statement that criticized Israel's actions, which drew criticism from Jewish advocacy groups.

The incident occurred as the university continues to navigate discussions surrounding campus activism and political expression.
