Colts Release Wide Receiver Darius Slayton
Indianapolis cuts ties with veteran receiver after brief stint, Slayton's NFL future uncertain.
The Indianapolis Colts announced Friday they have released wide receiver Darius Slayton, who joined the team in late September. The move comes after a short tenure where Slayton did not see game action.
The Colts had signed Slayton to add depth at wideout when Alec Pierce was placed on injured reserve with a heel issue. They had hoped his familiarity with quarterback Daniel Jones, stemming from their time together with the New York Giants, would provide a downfield threat.
Slayton, 29, spent seven seasons with the Giants after being selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He recorded 296 career receptions for 4,435 yards and averaged 15.0 yards per catch. He led the Giants in receiving yards in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
His production with the Giants saw a gradual decline in recent years. Slayton was hampered by double sports hernias last season, undergoing surgery on April 30. The Giants released him on September 7.
Slayton had recently suffered a knee injury during practice with the Colts, which sidelined him for Week 5. Head coach Shane Steichen had stated earlier in the week that the injury had improved.
The Colts have faced depth issues at receiver this season, with Ashton Dulin also dealing with a hamstring injury and Keenan Allen missing a game due to an injury.
