Colts in Trade Talks for Star Running Back Jonathan Taylor Amid Team Fire Sale

The Indianapolis Colts are engaged in active trade discussions for star running back Jonathan Taylor following a meeting between the player and owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon. This development comes as the Colts, currently 2-5 on the season, appear to be in a period of rebuilding, having already traded key players.

ESPN reports that trade talks for Taylor are ongoing, with numerous teams reaching out to inquire about the availability of the All-Pro running back. Taylor, 27, has been a prominent figure in the league, leading the NFL in rushing yards in 2021 and leading in rushing touchdowns last season.

Several teams have reportedly expressed interest, including the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, and Seattle Seahawks. The Colts are reportedly seeking a significant return for Taylor, with speculation that the package could be comparable to the multiple draft picks the San Francisco 49ers acquired for Christian McCaffrey in 2022.

Taylor is currently under contract with a $15 million signing bonus received before the season, with additional contract details including $15 million in 2027 and $9.46 million in 2028. He addressed his situation on October 29, stating his commitment to the Colts while acknowledging the uncertainty. "I haven't heard anything," Taylor told reporters. "I can't control that. Obviously, you guys know that I'm always proud to wear the horseshoe. I'm always proud to be here.... But obviously, circumstances may cause otherwise."

His wife, Ayanna Taylor, also shared her concerns on social media regarding the team's recent moves. The firing of general manager Chris Ballard and the trade of Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks have fueled speculation about the stability of the roster. "But now Chris Ballard gets fired, Quenton Nelson is traded, is literally anybody safe on this team?" she posted on Instagram. "Naturally, my mind is spiraling. Is this the start of the trading frenzy? What does this mean for my husband and I? Do I need to start packing our bags?"

The Colts' decision to potentially move Taylor comes after they traded defensive lineman DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers and guard Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks. While owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon reportedly prefers to keep Taylor as part of a future rebuild, the active trade talks suggest a shift in strategy given the potential assets the team could acquire.
