Colts Coach Backs Quarterback Despite Struggles; GM, Coach Under Fire
Head coach Shane Steichen affirmed Daniel Jones will remain the starting quarterback, but acknowledged team struggles amidst fan discontent.
Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen stated that quarterback Daniel Jones will not be benched, despite the team's recent loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans and Jones's season-total of six interceptions in six games. Jones has thrown at least one interception in each of the last four contests.
"I think Daniel knows he's got to play better," Steichen said. "I got to coach better."
Despite Steichen's public support for Jones, the coach and general manager Chris Ballard are facing significant pressure. The Colts have lost four of their six games, including two at home, leading to boos from the home crowd and chants of "fire Ballard" by the end of Sunday's game.
"We've got to give them something to cheer about, you know?" Steichen commented on the fan reaction. "I don't blame them for booing one freaking bit."
This sentiment echoes frustrations expressed by owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon last season after the team's collapse, which included seven consecutive losses. At that time, Irsay-Gordon stated, "I'm pissed. We're all pissed." She also conveyed a clear message to Ballard and Steichen that "the sense of urgency for them to deliver and perform has never been higher."
Losing to the Titans, a team that has experienced organizational instability in recent years, has exacerbated concerns about the Colts' direction. Steichen acknowledged the team's current situation, stating, "Obviously, my job is to get this team ready and that's what I'm focused on right now."
Steichen acknowledged that he would be fortunate to complete the season without a change in direction, suggesting that a shift could potentially provide the owner with a head start on finding new leadership rather than proceeding without transparency.
