Collins, Ossoff Trade Barbs in Fiery Georgia Senate Debate

Republican challenger Mike Collins and Democratic incumbent Sen. Jon Ossoff exchanged sharp personal attacks during their first debate for the Georgia Senate seat, with Ossoff accusing Collins of bigotry and Collins deriding Ossoff as a "trust fund kid" funded by controversial donors.

"Mike Collins has brought dishonor to our state through his personal bigotry and his widely documented ties to white nationalists," Ossoff stated in his opening remarks. The senator repeatedly invoked past controversies involving Collins, his staff, and his son-in-law, suggesting Collins held racist and antisemitic views. Ossoff claimed, "If John Lewis were marching today from Selma to Montgomery, Mike Collins would be grabbing a billy club."

Collins, in response, asserted, "I’ve condemned racism, antisemitism, hate. I don’t care where the source is." He added, "It’s wrong. We have no place in this world for that."

Collins also targeted Ossoff's campaign contributions, particularly from billionaire Reid Hoffman, whom Collins described as "one of Epstein’s buddies." The congressman criticized Ossoff for not denouncing figures like Abdul El-Sayed and Hasan Piker, suggesting Ossoff was aligned with them due to donor relationships.

Furthermore, Collins attacked Ossoff’s stance on tax cuts and his role in the 2025 government shutdown. "My opponent’s a trust fund kid who’s never had a job in his life. He doesn’t understand that. He doesn’t understand business," Collins stated. He also blamed Ossoff for a 48-day government shutdown, arguing it delayed emergency aid for Hurricane Helene relief efforts.

According to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls, Ossoff holds an approximate 8-point lead over Collins in the Georgia Senate race.
