Collins Holds Slim Lead Over Jackson in Tight Maine Senate Race, Poll Shows

Republican Sen. Susan Collins holds a narrow lead over her Democratic challenger, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, in a crucial Senate race in Maine, according to a new poll released by The New York Times and Siena College. The survey shows Collins with 49% support among likely voters compared to Jackson's 46%, with 5% undecided. This three-point advantage falls within the poll's margin of error.

Democrats are targeting Collins' seat as part of their strategy to regain control of the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. The poll, conducted from September 15-22, is among the first to show Collins ahead since Jackson replaced former nominee Graham Platner in late July.

Platner, who had won the Democratic primary, withdrew from the race in late July following a report detailing an allegation of rape from a previous relationship. He denied the report but stepped aside, leading to Jackson securing the party's nomination through a special convention. Collins had trailed Platner in most polling before his withdrawal.

Campaign Challenges and Allegations

The poll's release coincided with Collins addressing a ProPublica report that alleged the FBI had sought to investigate her and others for potential pay-to-play schemes, though the investigation was later dropped and no charges were filed. Collins dismissed the report as an "offensive" and "partisan hit job," while Jackson stated on social media that "Susan Collins is blatantly corrupt."

Despite the preference among 55% of poll respondents for Democrats to control the Senate, Collins maintains an edge. This is partly attributed to favorable ratings, with 51% viewing her favorably and 48% unfavorably. In contrast, Jackson has a 41% favorable rating and a 49% unfavorable rating.

Jackson has faced scrutiny over past allegations regarding his temper, workplace conduct, and reported mortgage improprieties. A resurfaced 1988 police record detailing accusations of assault also emerged, which Jackson addressed by stating, "I took responsibility for it then, and I take responsibility for it now. But let me be clear: I have never been violent with my partner Lana, or any other woman."

Collins' Political Landscape

Collins, the only Republican senator seeking re-election in a state that voted for President Trump in the previous election, is navigating a challenging political climate. Factors such as Trump's approval ratings, inflation, and high fuel prices contribute to the headwinds.

She has faced criticism from Democrats regarding her 2018 vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and her support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) funding following a fatal shooting involving ICE agents.

However, Collins has also demonstrated independence from Trump, at times voting against his administration's policies. Her tenure has been marked by a history of successful re-elections, including a nearly 9-point victory six years prior, despite then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden carrying the state by a similar margin.

New York Times/Siena College polls released concurrently in other key Senate races showed Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas leading former Republican Sen. John E. Sununu 50%-45% in New Hampshire, and Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed ahead of former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers 49%-44% in Michigan.
