College football's Week 1 is set to deliver a slate of games highlighted by significant matchups and ongoing legal developments concerning collegiate athletics. The opening weekend culminates with No. 3 Clemson facing LSU in Baton Rouge, marking Lane Kiffin's debut as LSU's head coach. This high-profile game is one of several key contests scheduled throughout the extended Labor Day weekend.
Legal Challenge Against SEC Looms
Parallel to the on-field action, a legal battle is unfolding in Baton Rouge, where the SEC and its commissioner, Greg Sankey, are named defendants in a lawsuit filed by plaintiffs related to the class of 2022 athletes. The lawsuit targets new guidelines approved by SEC member schools. The conference has stated its intention to contest the allegations in court, asserting its rights as a voluntary association.
"The order entered against the SEC and Commissioner Sankey is a temporary restraining order, not a final ruling on the merits," the SEC said in a statement. "The SEC and Commissioner Sankey are prepared to contest the allegations in the plaintiffs’ petition at Thursday morning’s hearing and defend the SEC’s rights as a voluntary association to fulfill its mission to its member institutions."
If an injunction is granted and some of the athletes involved in the case are cleared to play, the SEC would face a decision on how to enforce its rules regarding athletes with potential NFL ties. The conference stated it will continue to comply with the court's order while it reviews the decision following the hearing.
Key Matchups Highlight Week 1 Schedule
The extended Week 1 schedule begins Thursday with Colorado facing Georgia Tech. The weekend's marquee game is Saturday's contest between Clemson and LSU at Tiger Stadium, a highly anticipated debut for Kiffin and a significant test for both teams.
Sunday features two notable matchups: Notre Dame against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, and Louisville taking on Ole Miss in Nashville. The latter marks Pete Golding's first game as Ole Miss's full-time head coach.
The opening weekend also includes SMU's game against Florida State on Monday. Following a less-than-convincing performance in their previous game, Florida State will need to address containment issues against SMU's quarterback.
Other games on the schedule include Auburn vs. Baylor on Saturday and Washington State vs. Washington on Sunday.
