Colgate University Suspends Men's Lacrosse Team Over 'Electronic Communications'

Colgate University has suspended its men's varsity lacrosse team and all related social activities, initiating an investigation into "electronic communications" among players that may have violated university and student conduct policies. The suspension was announced approximately three months before the start of the 2027 season, with the specific nature of the communications not yet disclosed.

According to reports, Colgate Athletics Director Yariv Amir and Dean of the College Dr. Paul J. McLoughlin informed students via email on Tuesday that the university had become aware of communications indicating potential breaches of established policies and student conduct standards as outlined in the Colgate University Student Handbook. The university stated that it adheres to its established processes for all student conduct investigations and will offer support to students throughout the inquiry.

The Colgate Student Athlete Handbook specifies that student-athletes failing to meet university and athletics department expectations may face disciplinary actions, including suspension from team activities and potential reduction or cancellation of athletic scholarships, in accordance with NCAA regulations.

Last season, Colgate's men's lacrosse team finished with a 6-9 record, including a 4-4 standing in Patriot League play. Their most recent NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2025, where they were eliminated in the first round.

This is not the first time Colgate has suspended an athletic team. In 2017, the rowing team faced suspension from all activities and its initial meet due to hazing allegations. In 2018, the men's swimming and diving team was suspended from fall competition and a winter training trip for violating policies related to hazing and excessive alcohol consumption.
