Coleen Rooney has spoken about experiencing "low periods" in her marriage to former footballer Wayne Rooney, expressing a desire for him to be more proactive since retiring from the sport. In an interview with Grazia, Rooney, 40, acknowledged that their relationship, which began in their teenage years, has had its share of difficulties, including public scrutiny over alleged infidelity.

She shared her perspective on relationships, stating, "I think people are too quick to jump [out of a relationship]. They’re too quick to call it a day... Sometimes, you’ve just got to work at it." Rooney emphasized that if a relationship has potential, effort should be made to salvage it, noting that their union is a marriage, not just a casual relationship.

The couple, who married in 2008, have four sons: Kai, 16, Klay, 13, Kit, 10, and Cass, eight. Rooney indicated that their approach to marriage involves mutual independence, with each pursuing their own interests while remaining committed to making the relationship work. "He’s doing his thing, I’m doing mine. ... If it’s not gonna work, it’s not gonna work. But if it is, just work at it to get back to where you were," she explained.

Wayne Rooney, who retired in 2021 after playing for clubs including Everton, Manchester United, and D.C. United, and representing England, now works in punditry. Coleen admitted that she sometimes feels Wayne needs to be more engaged in his post-football life. "Sometimes I think, ‘Come on Wayne, pull your finger out!’ but he came out of a structured environment since he was a kid, it’s hard to navigate which way you’re gonna go,” she said.

Rooney also touched upon past marital challenges, referencing infidelity scandals that have made headlines. In a 2023 documentary about her husband's career, she discussed how her parents' support and her focus on their children influenced her decision to stay and work through difficult times. She believes in confronting issues directly: "There's nothing that we can't deal with and that's my way in a situation - let's sit down and see what we can do and can we make it work?...

And we have. We're not the lovey-dovey type anyway, we like to have a laugh and we work well together."
