Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to address Palmer's withdrawal on Friday. Tuchel had previously cautioned Palmer, stating he needed to "perform" to justify his inclusion after not being selected for the World Cup following a subpar previous season with Chelsea. "Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kind of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination," Tuchel said.
Palmer has been a regular starter for Chelsea this season under manager Xabi Alonso, playing in every Premier League game. He has started four full 90-minute matches since the opening game against Fulham and has contributed two goals and two assists in league play. This follows an injury-affected previous campaign where he battled thigh and hamstring problems, finishing with 11 goals and three assists in 34 appearances.
Palmer is not the only Chelsea player facing international unavailability due to injury. Joao Pedro has withdrawn from the Brazil squad, and Moises Caicedo has been left out of the Ecuador squad. Chelsea captain Reece James was also notably absent from the England selection.
