The coffee slushie has emerged as a popular summer beverage, gaining traction on social media as a refreshing, caffeine-packed treat. This frozen drink trend involves freezing brewed coffee and then blending it into a frosty consistency. Nutritionists note that the frozen format itself does not inherently change the health profile of coffee.
Lauren Manaker, a dietitian nutritionist, explained that a homemade coffee slushie can be a more nutritious choice compared to conventional slushies, which often contain high amounts of added sugars and minimal nutritional value. She suggests using dairy milk to enhance the drink's satiety, as it provides essential nutrients and protein without added sugars. For individuals with lactose intolerance, lactose-free dairy milk offers similar benefits.
The primary nutritional concern, according to Manaker, lies not with the coffee itself but with the accompaniments. Flavored syrups, sweetened creamers, and sugary toppings can significantly alter the drink's composition, potentially turning it into a dessert-like beverage.
Chandra Holt, founder of Incredibrew, highlighted that coffee is well-suited for the slushie format due to its high water content. This allows for a smooth blend without the need to add ice, preserving the coffee flavor. Both cold brew and hot coffee, once cooled, can be used to create the base for the slushie. Holt recommends brewing a stronger batch of coffee to ensure a robust flavor profile after the addition of milk.
