Cody Bellinger Steps Up for Yankees Amidst Aaron Judge's Injury

The New York Yankees are facing a critical juncture in their season with captain Aaron Judge sidelined indefinitely due to a strained right calf. Manager Aaron Boone stated the team is "not expecting" Judge to be available for the upcoming wild-card series, placing increased importance on the performance of other key players, particularly Cody Bellinger.

Bellinger has recently answered the call, most notably hitting a two-run home run in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays on September 22, 2026. This blast, his 17th of the season and fifth in his last 12 games, provided the only scoring in the Yankees' 2-0 victory. The home run came after Ben Rice doubled to lead off the fourth inning against Rays right-hander Nick Martinez.

"He had a great at-bat in front of me and saw a lot of pitches," Bellinger said of Rice's leadoff double. "It was a close game. I’m not trying to do too much at all. I want to keep it really simple, put a good swing on the ball."

Bellinger, whose $36.5 million salary this year is second only to Judge's $40 million, has been largely splitting time at the second spot in the order with Rice in Judge's absence. His recent offensive surge is a welcome development for a Yankees team looking to maintain its playoff push.

Beyond his bat, Bellinger also contributed with his defense. In the sixth inning of the game against the Rays, he started an inning-ending double play by throwing out Victor Mesa Jr. at first base after Mesa failed to return in time following a single.

Manager Boone acknowledged Bellinger's recent form: "He went through that stretch when he was struggling and then got injured. But he’s dialed in now and hitting line drives all over the ballpark. It’s good to see as we get down the stretch."

The Yankees have previously navigated significant time without Judge, who missed over three months earlier in the summer with a fractured rib. During that period, the team managed to stay in postseason contention, a testament to the depth of talent within the roster.

"We have a lot of talent in this locker room, a lot of depth," Bellinger said. "A lot of different guys stepped up, whether it’s their first year in the big leagues or getting traded here. We keep playing winning baseball."
