Pest control experts have observed a significant escalation in cockroach infestations, with some describing the situation as an "absolute explosion" in recent months. This surge has led to homes being found with hundreds of thousands of cockroaches.
One pest controller noted a stark difference compared to previous years, stating that five years ago, such issues were infrequent. "In the last 12 months, we've had hundreds and hundreds," he said, adding that he had already handled six such cases in the current month alone. This increase is attributed, in part, to warmer weather patterns, with prolonged periods exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) accelerating the insects' development and breeding cycles.
Cockroaches have also been found in commercial settings, including restaurants and parts of the transport industry. Their resilience and rapid reproductive capabilities allow populations to grow quickly under favorable conditions. Cockroaches can be transported through luggage and other personal items, facilitating their spread.
The British Pest Control Association (BPCA), a representative body for the industry, has also received reports of heightened cockroach activity in some urban areas. While a nationwide increase across all regions is difficult to confirm, the association suggests that a combination of factors is likely responsible for the observed rise in infestations. This includes the role of warmer temperatures in fostering cockroach populations.
