Coast Guard Rescues Sailor After Sailboat Grounds on Santa Rosa Island
A sailor was airlifted to safety by the Coast Guard after their 25-foot sailboat ran aground on Santa Rosa Island off the Southern California coast.
A sailor was airlifted to safety by the Coast Guard after a sailboat ran aground on Santa Rosa Island off the Southern California coast this week.
The Coast Guard received a report around 12:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, that a 25-foot sailboat had become stranded on the island.
Santa Rosa Island is part of Channel Islands National Park, located off the Santa Barbara County coast, and is California’s second largest island, according to the National Park Service.
Emergency crews responded to the scene by helicopter, airlifting the sailor from the island. The sailor was taken to Camarillo Airport, where they were evaluated by the Ventura County Fire Department. No injuries were reported.
Photos released by the Coast Guard showed the sailboat stranded along the island’s shoreline and rescue crews in a grassy area nearby. The sailboat was later removed by a local towing company and taken to Ventura Harbor.
The Coast Guard has not immediately responded to requests for more information regarding the cause of the grounding or the identity of the rescued individual.
