A coalition of 13 organizations in Jersey, including charities, schools, and businesses, is formally requesting the island's government to establish a dedicated taskforce to combat poverty. The group has communicated its concerns through an open letter to the council of ministers, citing evidence that numerous families are experiencing significant strain due to the escalating cost of living.

According to the letter, one in four children in Jersey are currently living in a low-income household. Patrick Lynch, representing Caritas Jersey, one of the signatories, emphasized that the government needs to collaborate with the organizations, as they possess the relevant expertise to assist. "We need to get the right people in the room," Lynch stated, adding that preliminary discussions with government officials have taken place and the coalition hopes for a positive response.

Among the other organizations that have signed the letter are Caring Cooks, the Jersey Community Foundation, and Mind Jersey. Additionally, Mentorhood Jersey, Milli's Separated and Step Family, La Petite Ecole Group of day Nurseries, Geomarine, Haute Vallée School, Brighter Futures, Khora Partners, Jersey Child Care Trust, and Freeda have also endorsed the appeal. The coalition noted that five other organizations and government agencies also signed the report outlining the need for action.

The Government of Jersey has been contacted for comment regarding the proposal for a poverty-focused taskforce.
