Ryan Clark is no longer employed by ESPN, a departure first reported by OutKick. Jason "Jah" Lee, a CNN contributor and senior editor at Bossip, suggested on CNN's "Morning" program that Clark may have been a casualty of a "culture war" retribution.
Lee raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Clark's termination, noting that ESPN informed him of the decision during a taping of "NFL Live" after OutKick had obtained the information and requested comment from the network. Lee posited that this timing was an attempt by ESPN to prevent OutKick's Dan Zaksheske and Bobby Burack from breaking the story.
"I think Ryan Clark got swept up in some level of culture war retribution," Lee stated. "The reason he got fired during the segment is because an outlet called OutKick contacted ESPN threatening to leak this information. How would OutKick get this information?"
Lee further speculated on OutKick's ownership by Fox News Corp and its founder, Clay Travis, suggesting that the early reporting might have been a deliberate move to embarrass Clark and push back against ESPN's recent public perception as a "liberal bastion."
Clark, a former Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, joined ESPN as an NFL analyst in 2015. According to OutKick reporting, he was earning approximately $2 million annually, a figure significantly higher than the average NFL analyst salary. Clark himself accused ESPN of intentionally leaking the news of his termination to OutKick.
