CNN host Laura Coates has pointed out a perceived hypocrisy in Donald Trump's long-standing rhetoric about politicians profiting from public office, contrasting his past statements with his most recent financial disclosures. Trump's disclosures this week revealed a surge in his income, notably from cryptocurrency earnings, during his second term.

Coates recalled Trump's frequent campaign theme of attacking politicians who enriched themselves while in office, referencing his "Drain the Swamp" slogan. She played a compilation of speeches delivered between 2016 and 2020, in which Trump criticized "the insiders" who allegedly "wrote the rules of the game to keep themselves in power and in the money," and accused "corrupt politicians" of "bleeding America dry."

Following the montage, Coates questioned whether Trump's own financial disclosure now served as "Exhibit A against him." She noted that "Americans are still living with huge economic uncertainty" and that "voters are rebelling against a system they say is way too expensive, way too tilted toward the powerful."

Coates suggested that Trump is now the establishment he once criticized, with his business empire reportedly "flush with fresh cash." She concluded by highlighting the ongoing public concern: "Americans, they are still asking, who is this economy working for?"
