CNN CEO Mark Thompson Expresses Desire to Remain with Network Post-Paramount Merger

CNN CEO Mark Thompson informed staff on Wednesday that he intends to remain with the network and be "useful" to its new leadership following the forthcoming takeover by Paramount. Thompson addressed these sentiments during a quarterly town hall meeting, where he also discussed the current state of the business and the network's editorial direction.
Thompson acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his position, stating that he does not yet know Paramount boss David Ellison's plans for CNN or his specific role within the merged company. "I feel bad for Mark," one staffer commented, suggesting Thompson is "as in the dark as all of us." Another employee noted that staff grew "upset" during the meeting due to Thompson's perceived lack of directness.
CNN employees have expressed anxiety since Paramount settled an antitrust suit with California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Monday, a move that clears the path for the merger. This deal will unite CBS News and CNN under a single media conglomerate that also includes Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., HBO Max, and Paramount+.
Sources previously indicated to The Post that CNN staff anticipate significant layoffs following the merger's completion, with Paramount projecting at least $6 billion in cost savings. Beyond job security concerns, CNN employees are reportedly apprehensive about potential changes under new leadership, drawing parallels to the recent restructuring at CBS News under its news chief, Bari Weiss. Speculation about Weiss potentially overseeing CNN's editorial operations has circulated, although some sources close to Ellison have reportedly dismissed this notion.
During the town hall, Thompson also briefly mentioned CNN's ongoing lawsuit against the Trump administration for revoking press credentials and barring reporters from White House grounds. He urged staff not to speculate about Ellison's plans, emphasizing that he shares their uncertainty.
