CNN has issued an apology to the family of Dolly Parton after mistakenly using a photograph of a Las Vegas impersonator while reporting on the country music star's death. The network aired an image of Kelly Vohnn, a veteran tribute artist who has portrayed Parton for years, during its coverage on Tuesday.
Vohnn, who learned of the error from friends, expressed her surprise and disappointment. "Somebody at CNN really messed up and didn’t do their research," she told The Post. Vohnn noted that Parton had been a significant inspiration to her throughout her career and felt that better choices could have been made for the tribute. "I felt so sorry and apologetic for Dolly, because over her career there are so many wonderful images and moments that they could have chosen from — and CNN just picked something not appropriate."
The mix-up occurred on the program "Laura Coates Live" approximately 12 hours after Parton's death from cancer was announced by her team. Vohnn clarified that she has always performed as a tribute artist and has never misrepresented herself as the actual singer.
Vohnn, originally from Toronto, began her performing career in tribute shows before venturing into country music. She later returned to tribute performing, developing a one-woman show and portraying various celebrities in Las Vegas productions. Despite her extensive career impersonating stars, Vohnn emphasized Parton's unique impact on her life and career.
Parton's death at age 80 followed a brief battle with cancer, according to her representatives. She passed away at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Tennessee.
