CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten has issued a stark warning regarding the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, describing the outlook for Republicans and Donald Trump as "f--ing rough." Enten's assessment, echoed by a Trump adviser who reportedly shared similar sentiments with the network, suggests a significant challenge for the party.
Enten cited Trump's approval ratings in key House battleground districts as a critical indicator. In September 2018, prior to the Democratic takeover of the House, Trump's net approval rating in these districts was minus 8. This year, that figure has doubled to minus 16, a trend Enten believes mathematically points toward a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.
The state of the economy is identified as a primary driver behind these projections. In 2018, 77% of voters in key House districts expressed a positive view of the economy under Trump's first term. Currently, Trump's economic approval rating in those same districts stands at 37%. While acknowledging that the metrics may not be identical, Enten asserted that this data underscores the difficult path ahead for Republicans.
In a segment on "CNN News Central," Enten elaborated on his analysis, stating, "The levee has been breached. The blue wave is coming over the wall, Speaker Johnson and President Trump." The data suggests that current economic sentiment and Trump's standing among voters in crucial districts present a significant hurdle for the Republican party as they approach the 2026 election cycle.
