A British holidaymaker has described a recent four-night stay at the Club Med Da Balaia resort in Portugal as a "ghastly reality," citing a range of issues that significantly detracted from the £3,000 "premium" all-inclusive experience. The reviewer, who opted for the resort for a family break during the Easter holidays, reported that the reality did not align with the company's branding or their expectations of a luxurious escape.

Upon arrival, the reviewer and their family were reportedly shown to their room via a "grotty stairwell" and had to ascend seven flights of stairs, as the main lift was broken for the duration of their stay. While a luggage service was provided on arrival, the reviewer stated that they had to transport their own suitcases down the stairs for an early departure due to a lack of available staff. The suite itself was described as disappointing, with a rock-hard bed, thin sheets and towels, and visible stains on the carpet, walls, and inside wardrobes and drawers. Complimentary toiletries were absent, replaced by unbranded soaps, and guests were directed to water coolers down the corridor.

Breakfast offerings were criticized as being predominantly unhealthy, with pancakes, muffins, and waffles, and a lack of fresh fruit and quality coffee. The reviewer also noted that staff were largely absent, providing little information about the food. Attempts to book the a la carte restaurant for dinner were unsuccessful, as it was reportedly fully booked on weekend days and closed on the first two days of their stay, leaving them with only the buffet option for all meals.

The resort's amenities also presented challenges. The reviewer noted a lack of sun loungers, towels, and parasols at the pool area, and that many advertised activities, including yoga, tennis lessons, and the kids' club, did not operate on Saturdays and Sundays, contrary to what was implied on the website. The kids' club, when open, was attended by staff who only spoke French, limiting its appeal to the reviewer's daughter.

During the weekend, the resort was reportedly crowded, with a high number of guests and day-pass holders contributing to an overcrowded pool. Attempts to find alternative entertainment, such as crazy golf, were met with a rundown course where one hole was closed. Additionally, many security gates on the grounds were reportedly broken, forcing guests to take detours.

Club Med has responded to the feedback, stating they are sorry the family's stay did not meet expectations and that the described issues do not reflect their standards. A spokesperson indicated that feedback has been shared with the resort team for improvements. However, they noted that the concerns were not raised during the stay, preventing the team from investigating and resolving them at the time. Club Med has invited the family to contact them directly for a full review of their experience. The reviewer, identified as Susannah Billings, is a pseudonym, and other identifying details have been changed.
