Clippers Interim Governor Thanks Kawhi Leonard, Outlines New Path Forward
John Gibson makes first public comments since taking over franchise following sanctions and the trade of star player Kawhi Leonard.
In his first public comments since assuming the role of interim CEO and governor, John Gibson expressed gratitude to Kawhi Leonard following the Los Angeles Clippers' trade of the star forward back to the Toronto Raptors.
Gibson addressed multiple aspects of the franchise in a video released by the Clippers, including the Leonard trade, the team's updated leadership structure, and plans for moving forward. The trade, which officially occurred on September 14, concluded a period of uncertainty for the team. This transaction followed a nearly five-month wait after the NBA sanctioned the Clippers on September 2 for circumventing the league's salary cap by facilitating off-court income for Leonard.
The Clippers received Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks in exchange for Leonard. This marks the end of a disappointing tenure for the player with the franchise, which saw only two playoff series victories during his seven seasons.
"We thank Kawhi for his contributions on the court and wish him well," Gibson stated. "At the same time, we are excited to welcome Brandon Ingram along with offseason additions Gradey Dick, Rui Hachimura, and Max Strus. They join a talented core that includes Darius Garland, Kris Dunn, Derrick Jones Jr., Brook Lopez, Kobe Sanders, Isaiah Jackson and Keaton Wagler, whom we were thrilled to select in this year’s draft."
The league's sanctions, which included a $30 million fine and the forfeiture of five future first-round draft picks, necessitated significant organizational changes. Owner Steve Ballmer received a one-year suspension, as did president of business operations Gillian Zucker. President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months.
In response to these changes, Trent Redden has been appointed interim president of basketball operations, and Mark Hughes is now the interim general manager. Gibson emphasized the franchise's "complete confidence" in head coach Tyronn Lue's leadership during this transition.
"Ty has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity, unite teams, and inspire players to perform at their best," Gibson said. "His leadership will be instrumental as we move forward."
Gibson, a lawyer based in Los Angeles and a longtime season-ticket holder, was named interim governor and CEO following Ballmer's suspension. He outlined a three-point plan for the franchise's future: building bridges through open engagement with all stakeholders, reinforcing a culture of compliance and accountability, and focusing on team and organizational improvements through a comprehensive review of operations.

We are conducting a thoughtful and comprehensive review of both basketball and business operations to ensure every decision supports a winning culture."
