Clippers Announce Jersey Swap for Fans on Opening Night
The team is offering a way for fans to exchange old jerseys for new ones as they aim to mend relationships after a summer of penalties.
The Los Angeles Clippers are introducing a jersey swap initiative for fans attending their Opening Night game on October 21st, as the team seeks to rebuild trust following a summer marred by NBA sanctions. The first 4,000 fans through the door will have the opportunity to trade in an old Clippers jersey for a new one.
This event marks a new era for the organization, which faced significant penalties from the NBA for violating salary cap circumvention rules. The team was stripped of five first-round draft picks, fined $30 million, and owner Steve Ballmer received a one-year suspension.
At the team's media day, interim president of basketball operations Trent Redden issued an apology to the fanbase. "Our fans deserve to hear from us before this, and for that we’re sorry," Redden stated. "We’ve been listening to the thoughts, the concerns, and feeling the emotions of our fan base. They mean everything to us. … We hope to fulfill our promises to them, to build their trust and move forward through this time."
Redden added that the franchise has a history of performing well under pressure and hopes to represent the fans by "coming out fighting."
The jersey swap appears to be another effort by the team to reconnect with its supporters after a challenging offseason. The success of this initiative and how many fans participate by swapping jerseys, particularly those bearing the names of star players like Kawhi Leonard, remains to be seen.
