Claire Valdez, a democratic socialist and current member of the New York State Assembly, is projected to win the Democratic nomination for New York’s 7th Congressional District, a victory that strengthens the hand of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who had endorsed her campaign. The race, characterized by some as a proxy battle for the future of progressive politics in the city, saw Valdez, a relative newcomer, narrowly defeat contenders including Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and City Councilor Julie Won.

Valdez, who has served in the State Assembly since 2025, emphasized her background as a union organizer, arguing it provided her with the necessary experience to represent the district. Her win is a significant boost for Mayor Mamdani, who championed the assemblywoman as part of an effort to support allies in congressional races. The district, often referred to as the “commie corridor” due to its strong base of young, left-leaning voters, presented a competitive primary landscape.

The contest for the NY-7 seat opened up after long-time representative Nydia Velázquez, the first Puerto Rican woman elected to Congress, announced she would not seek reelection in 2026. Valdez garnered endorsements from prominent figures such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. In contrast, Reynoso received backing from Velázquez, the Working Families Party, and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Despite running on largely progressive platforms that included addressing the housing crisis, abolishing ICE, and advocating for Medicare for All, the candidates' endorsements highlighted a division within Democratic factions. The race was viewed as a test of Mamdani's political influence following his mayoral win and a competition for the district's evolving identity. NY-7 encompasses a diverse area of Brooklyn that has experienced significant gentrification in recent years.

Valdez faced scrutiny from opponents who characterized her as a symbol of the transplants contributing to the district's gentrification and shifting political dynamics, noting she was born in Texas. Reynoso, a native New Yorker and child of immigrants, positioned himself as having deeper roots in the community and more extensive political experience.

Pre-election polling indicated a tight race between Valdez and Reynoso, with Won trailing. In the final days before the election, Mayor Mamdani campaigned with Valdez, leveraging his high approval rating in the district, which a recent poll placed at 78%.
