Supermodel Cindy Crawford and actor Richard Gere, once a prominent power couple of the early 1990s, are in the spotlight again as their children, Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere, co-star in the upcoming mini-series "The Shards." The series marks a reunion of sorts for the exes' offspring, 31 years after Crawford and Gere's own marriage ended in divorce.
Crawford, 60, and Gere, 76, had a whirlwind romance that led to their marriage in Las Vegas in December 1991. They divorced four years later, and according to reports, have largely avoided each other since. Crawford has described Gere as having become a "stranger" to her in the years following their split. However, a source told Globe that the exes are now "dropping their defenses and playing nice... for the kids."
Crawford, who was 22 when she began dating Gere in the late 1980s, met the then 39-year-old actor at a barbecue hosted by photographer Herb Ritts. She has spoken about their early relationship, recalling in an Apple TV documentary "The Super Models" how young women might adapt to their partner's interests. Their relationship garnered significant media attention, highlighted by appearances at events like the 1991 Academy Awards, where Crawford wore a notable red Versace gown.
Their Las Vegas wedding was a spontaneous affair. Crawford recalled in 2015 that after dating for several years, she asked Gere, "Are we doing this or what?" He suggested they go to Vegas that night. Crawford wore an Armani suit and exchanged rings made of aluminum foil, with Herb Ritts serving as the bridesmaid and photographer.
The marriage, which lasted four years, concluded in 1995. Crawford, then 29, cited the 17-year age gap and their demanding schedules as contributing factors. She also reflected on a power imbalance, stating in a 2016 podcast that they were "a lot of other things, but I don't know if we were ever friends-- like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere." As she approached her 30s, Crawford felt her own sense of self evolving, moving from a desire to follow to one of walking side-by-side or leading.
Crawford later found love with businessman Rande Gerber, with whom she has two children, Kaia and Presley. Gere remarried twice and has three sons, including two young children with Alejandra Silva.
Now, Kaia Gerber, 24, and Homer Gere, 26, are taking their own steps into the entertainment world together. They met two weeks before filming began for "The Shards," a series based on Bret Easton Ellis's novel. Homer Gere noted that he and his sister had never met prior to the production and acknowledged the unique situation of working together. "Immediately, I think me or her were like, should we address the elephant in the room?" he told USA Today, adding that Gerber is a "lovely actress" and they have become "really close."
"The Shards" is described as a violent and sexually charged story about a serial killer targeting privileged high school students in 1980s Los Angeles. The series stars Igby Rigney as Bret, with Homer Gere playing a new student named Robert Mallory and Kaia Gerber portraying Susan Reynolds. The project, originally developed for HBO, was later revived by Ryan Murphy and FX.
Gerber, already an established model who won Model of the Year in 2018 and has appeared on the cover of Vogue multiple times, has also acted in "Palm Royale" and the film "Mother Mary." The new series is expected to further boost the careers of both Gerber and Gere.
