Church Worker Loses Unfair Dismissal Claim Amid Fallout From Secret Affair
A church worker's unfair dismissal claim was denied after a secret workplace affair involving explicit messages led to allegations and an apprehended violence order.
A church worker has lost an unfair dismissal bid following the conclusion of a secret workplace affair. The employee's claim was dismissed after the relationship with a colleague, which involved the exchange of explicit images, led to allegations and an apprehended violence order (AVO).
The worker, identified as Martyn Childs, had been employed at the Greek Orthodox Parish of St Spyridon for seven months before his dismissal on July 14. According to the decision published recently, Childs reportedly received sexually explicit images and videos from his colleague. He was found to have failed to appropriately discourage or report these communications to the parish.
The fallout from the affair, including alleged repeated contact and an AVO, played a role in the dismissal and subsequent legal challenge. The tribunal ultimately ruled against the unfair dismissal claim, finding the employer's actions to be justified in light of the circumstances.
