The Richmond Christmas Fair in North Yorkshire has canceled its planned live reindeer attraction following backlash from animal welfare advocates and parents online. The decision was announced Monday by the fair's organizing committee, citing the "strength of feeling surrounding this issue" as the primary reason for withdrawing the animals.
The fair, scheduled for November 29, had initially announced the reindeer's inclusion two weeks prior, promoting it as a festive addition for attendees. However, the announcement quickly drew criticism, leading the committee to reconsider the booking.
The North East Animal Rights group welcomed the decision, stating, "We welcome the decision to remove the reindeer and wish the organisers a successful animal-free event."
In a statement, the Richmond Christmas Fair committee clarified that the cancellation did not stem from any concerns about the specific company booked to provide the reindeer. They described the company as professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to animal welfare. The committee expressed gratitude for the company's understanding and apologized for their inability to participate.
The statement emphasized that the reindeer would have been cared for and managed by experienced handlers, with their welfare always a key consideration. The committee also noted that the fair is organized entirely by volunteers and that the controversy surrounding the reindeer booking had created significant pressure.
"In the end, we felt the kindest and most sensible course of action was to step back from this particular attraction and focus our energy on delivering a positive and enjoyable event for everyone," the committee stated. They acknowledged that some individuals would be disappointed but promised that other festive activities would still be available.
The decision sparked mixed reactions from the public. Some parents expressed disappointment, with comments such as "It's sad when a few paranoid people ruin things for everyone" and "That's a shame as my son was looking forward to seeing them." Others supported the cancellation, with one resident noting, "This is a good decision. The photos and stories when the reindeers were used in Middlesbrough for a similar event last year were awful."
The committee further explained that the decision was made to protect volunteers from harassment and to prevent potential protests from disrupting the event. They expressed hope that attendees would still enjoy the fair.
The Richmond Christmas Fair, part-funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, is organized annually by the Richmond Business and Tourism Association. It aims to bring the community together and support local organizations to mark the start of the festive season.
