The Richmond Christmas Fair in North Yorkshire has canceled plans to feature live reindeer following a significant backlash on social media that organizers described as a 'woke' row over animal welfare. The event, scheduled for Sunday, November 29, initially advertised the presence of real reindeer.
However, the suggestion sparked an uproar, leading to the cancellation of the animal booking. Organizers stated that the decision was made to shield volunteers from harassment and stress, and to prevent protests from disrupting the event.
"While we respect that people have different views, the strength of feeling surrounding this issue has created additional pressure for those giving their time freely to make the fair happen," the Richmond Business and Tourism Association, which runs the fair, said in a statement. "The decision was made to protect the hard-working volunteers from undue harassment and stress in the lead-up to the event and also to protect the enjoyment of the day for everyone from protests that were building."
The association emphasized that the cancellation was not due to concerns about the animal company, which they found to be professional and dedicated to animal welfare. The reindeer were to be cared for by experienced handlers.
The move has disappointed some parents who had promised their children the chance to see reindeer. Social media criticism labeled the decision as "giving in to the woke bullies."
Conversely, the North East Animal Rights group welcomed the decision, stating, "We welcome the decision to remove the reindeer and wish the organisers a successful animal-free event."
Despite the controversy surrounding the reindeer, organizers assured attendees that the fair would still offer ample festive entertainment and activities for all ages, focusing on community engagement and supporting local organizations.
