Christine Taylor Earned Modest Salary on Nickelodeon's 'Hey Dude'
The actress revealed she was paid $3,500 per episode for her role as Melody Hanson.
Christine Taylor, known for her role as Melody Hanson in the Nickelodeon series "Hey Dude," disclosed that her per-episode salary was $3,500. The popular teen sitcom aired for five seasons from 1989 to 1991.
During an appearance on the "We’re Still Here, Babe" podcast hosted by "The Secret World of Alex Mack" actress Natanya Ross, Taylor discussed the compensation she received for the role. She recalled conversations with her castmates about their earnings, estimating that by the final season, they believed they were making $5,000 per episode.
"No, we were making $3,500 an episode, I’m pretty sure, because they would bump us up $500 every season," Taylor stated. She clarified that this amount was consistent across the cast, including herself and her co-stars David Brisbin, Kelly Brown, Debra Kalman, David Lascher, Joe Torres, Geoffrey Coy, Jonathan Galkin, and Josh Tygiel.
Taylor mentioned that she was financially prudent during her time on the show, aided by family support. She noted that early in her career, acting required careful budgeting, including managing expenses like laundry and food. "It wasn’t like you get to LA, you start working and suddenly you’re on the scene," she said.
In related career reflections, Taylor recently shared that she was asked to lose 10 pounds for her role as Marcia Brady in the 1995 film "The Brady Bunch Movie." She described the request as characteristic of the 1990s industry standards and something that would not be expected today, admitting it was an embarrassing demand at the time.
Taylor, who married actor Ben Stiller in May 2000, has two children with him. The couple initially separated in 2017 but reconciled in 2022.
