Model Christine McGuinness became emotional while discussing the most challenging aspect of parenting on a recent podcast episode. Speaking on "Parent Unplugged," she revealed that the hardest part is preparing her three children to live independently, acknowledging that she cannot imagine living without them.
McGuinness, who shares twins Leo and Penelope, aged 11, and eight-year-old Felicity with ex-husband Paddy McGuinness, noted that all three children have autism. She explained that a parent's or carer's primary role is to ensure their children can cope and manage on their own, especially with their additional needs.
"I can't live without these three kids and one day they have to live without me," McGuinness stated. "So I need to prepare them to be as independent as possible, especially with their additional needs as well."
She previously spoke about the challenges faced by parents of neurodiverse children, including the limited accessibility of playgrounds for children with disabilities. McGuinness highlighted that finding suitable outdoor play spaces for her children is a significant challenge, as many parks lack sensory equipment, quiet areas, or safety features like gates.
"Outdoor play should be there for everyone. It is a right for everybody it shouldn't just be as limited as what it is," she said, noting that families often travel considerable distances to find appropriate facilities.
McGuinness, who was diagnosed with autism and ADHD at age 33, realized her neurodivergence after her children received their diagnoses. She found similarities in their struggles with socializing, sensory issues, and navigating busy environments. Accepting her own diagnoses has helped her maintain a strong bond with her children and reassure them about their capabilities and future.
