Christina Applegate has been discharged from the hospital and returned home after a nearly four-month stay amid her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis (MS). TMZ reported that the 54-year-old actress had been hospitalized in Los Angeles since late March. Sources familiar with the situation indicated that Applegate is doing well since transitioning back to home life.
Few details have been released regarding the specific reasons for her extended hospitalization, leaving it unclear if it was directly related to her MS or other health issues. Applegate, who was diagnosed with MS in 2021, previously shared updates on her health in April, reassuring followers on Instagram that she was getting "stronger and better every day."
At that time, she posted a picture of her memoir, "You With The Sad Eyes," explaining she was "taking a moment to focus on her health." Her caption read, "Thank you for the outpouring of love and well wishes. Health issues are a constant for me, but I'm a strong chick and I'm getting stronger and better every day. I'm taking a moment to focus on my health, but I'll be back with more to say soon enough."
Applegate's representative declined to comment on her hospitalization or medical treatments, stating, "She's had a long history of complicated medical conditions that she has been refreshingly open about, as evidenced in her memoir and on her podcast."
Earlier in February, Applegate revealed in an interview with People that her MS battle has largely confined her to bed due to pain. Despite this, she makes an effort to leave her bedroom to take her teenage daughter to school, describing it as her "favorite thing to do" and "the only time we have together by ourselves." She added, "I tell myself, 'Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.' And that's what I do."
Applegate has been candid about the challenges of her condition, stating, "My life isn't wrapped up with a bow. People's lives, sorry for lack of a better term, f***ing suck sometimes. So I'm being as honest and raw as I possibly can."
Multiple sclerosis is a disease where the immune system attacks the myelin sheath, the protective covering of nerve fibers. Symptoms can include numbness, weakness, difficulty walking, and vision changes, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In an excerpt from her memoir published in The Guardian in March, Applegate described exhaustion as one of the worst side effects of MS, writing, "It feels as though I've been on a three‑day sleepless bender – and that's how I feel after a good night's sleep. Hence all the time I spend on and in bed, snuggled up against my heating pad."
She also reflected on how the diagnosis has changed her perspective: "On the back of that diagnosis and the symptoms I face, I no longer care what I say or how I come across or how it makes anyone feel. I don't have patience for bulls*** any more, for things that are meaningless or merely 'extra.'"
Applegate announced her MS diagnosis on social media in August 2021, stating, "Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It's been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going."
During an episode of her podcast "MeSsy" last year, Applegate revealed she had been hospitalized upward of 30 times in the three years since her diagnosis. She shared, "They've done every test known to man on me, put so much radiation into my body from CT scans to everything else."
She recounted recording a podcast episode from her hospital bed in August 2025 after being admitted due to feeling unwell following a family trip to Europe. Applegate stated she wanted to stay in the hospital for answers and to undergo extensive testing. She experienced severe pain in her right side, leading to an emergency CT scan that revealed a kidney infection.
