Christian Yelich paid heartfelt tribute to legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker following the Milwaukee Brewers' first-ever World Series title, a victory over the Tampa Bay Rays secured with a 4-1 win in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Uecker, who served as the voice of the Brewers for 54 years, died on January 16, 2025, at the age of 90.
"He’s smiling, man," Yelich said in an on-air interview after the game. "I really wish he could have been here to see this. It would have meant everything to him, but we said a bunch, he’s been with us a lot. We keep him close to our hearts, and this one’s still for Bob and still for Ueck. Ueck, I love you, man, and we did it."
Uecker's enduring presence was felt throughout the postseason. Fans left beer cans at his statue outside the stadium before Game 5, a tradition that emerged in his honor. Hall of Famer CC Sabathia also posted a tribute on X, writing, "Bob Uecker smiling down." Sabathia played for the Brewers in 2008.
During Game 4, Fox play-by-play announcer Joe Davis paid homage to Uecker with his home run call for Cooper Pratt's solo blast in the 12th inning. Davis emulated Uecker's signature "Get up, get up, get outta here, gone!" call, noting Uecker's comic genius and underappreciated broadcasting talent.
"I say that to say I was always studying him and listening to him, and just by osmosis, that stuff is in there," Davis told MLB.com.
