Christian McCaffrey Defends Brock Purdy Amid Ongoing Scrutiny
The 49ers running back expressed his continued belief in the quarterback's abilities, stating he is 'special'.
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has grown weary of persistent questions about his quarterback Brock Purdy's performance, asserting that Purdy's talent has been evident for years and that he is a "special" player.
"I feel like I answer that question all the time," McCaffrey stated. "And it’s like at some point … He’s an incredible, great quarterback. He’s unbelievable. So can he take it to another level? I mean, yeah. But he’s already in the category of somebody that is special."
McCaffrey elaborated on the repetitive nature of the inquiries, noting, "Again, I’ve been answering that question for years now. ‘Are you shocked how good he is?’ And then next week, ‘are you shocked how good he is?’ And next year, ‘are you shocked how good he is?’ Now, I’m not shocked. He’s special."
Purdy delivered a near-flawless performance in the 49ers' recent game against the Miami Dolphins, completing 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards and three total touchdowns, with only two incompletions. He currently holds the highest overall player grade in the NFL with a 96.6 rating heading into Monday Night Football.
Despite being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy has consistently defied expectations and demonstrated the capabilities of a franchise quarterback.
"He’s special. I think that’d be the word I’d use for it. When him and Kyle [Shanahan] get on a role like that, it’s so fun to watch," McCaffrey said. "It’s unbelievable to watch: how decisive he is, how good he is at throwing on time and then also creating when he has to. When he’s at the helm we feel good."
