Christian Horner Credits Wife Geri Halliwell for Early F1 Career Funding
Red Bull's former team principal revealed that Spice Girls-themed cakes indirectly financed his racing days before they even met.
Christian Horner, former team principal for Red Bull, has shared that his wife, Geri Halliwell, played a role in financing his early career in motorsport, years before they met.
Horner, 52, explained at an event promoting his new memoir, 'Drive', that his Formula 3000 team had a sponsor producing celebration cakes for major retailers like Asda and Sainsbury's. This sponsor had licensing deals for characters such as Dennis the Menace and the then-new girl band, the Spice Girls.
Initially, Horner was advised to feature Dennis the Menace on his car, but sales of the related cakes were only average. However, the Spice Girls-themed cakes proved to be a massive success, leading to increased payments for Horner's team. "Indirectly, she financed my early career," Horner stated.
The couple first met in 2009 at the Monaco Grand Prix and married in 2015. Horner hinted at a potential return to motorsport, describing the sport as a "magnet that keeps trying to pull me back in." He has been out of the daily operations for about 14 months, time he has spent with his family.
Horner was dismissed as Red Bull's team principal and chief executive in July 2025, concluding a period during which he oversaw 14 world championship titles. This departure followed allegations of inappropriate behavior made by a female colleague in 2024. Horner denied all wrongdoing, and two independent investigations led to the dismissal of the claims. Geri Halliwell publicly supported her husband throughout the ordeal.
Horner indicated that if he were to return to the sport, it would be for a project with a team focused on winning, where he could be actively involved. He reflected on the significant sacrifices required to achieve success at the highest level of motorsport and his past dedication, which included missing family occasions.
Earlier this month, reports revealed that Horner received a substantial payout of £33.5 million from Red Bull Racing, designated as compensation for loss of office. Including his salary of £4.4 million paid prior to his departure, his total earnings amounted to £38 million.
