New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has expressed his frustration with the ongoing lack of progress in contract negotiations. With the regular season just two weeks away, Gonzalez, who is seeking a long-term contract extension, remains without a new deal.
Gonzalez returned to practice on Monday after a brief absence reportedly due to a minor injury. He was back in uniform for Tuesday's workout, the team's last before traveling to Cleveland for their final preseason game. However, Gonzalez declined to definitively confirm that his absence was solely due to injury, leaving open the possibility that it was related to the contract talks.
"I'm not going to get into that," Gonzalez stated. "I'm out here now. So it is what it is."
The Patriots' projected starters have largely sat out the preseason thus far, and it remains uncertain how much playing time they will receive in the upcoming exhibition game.
Despite the impasse, Patriots vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf reiterated the team's desire to sign Gonzalez to an extension. Wolf stated that owner Robert Kraft's previous comments about offering Gonzalez a deal to make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history still reflect the team's intent.
Gonzalez is currently playing under his rookie contract, signed in 2023, which includes a base salary of $2.25 million for the current season and $18.1 million in the final year of 2027. Wolf acknowledged the ongoing discussions, stating, "We want him here. He's an elite player. Been on record saying that before and we continue to work with his representation to find a resolution that works for everyone."
Gonzalez acknowledged that seeing other players at his position secure new deals has been difficult. Earlier this month, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132 million contract extension with $101 million guaranteed, making him the league's highest-paid cornerback.
"It's frustrating. But I'm focused on the season. I'm focused on here now and doing what I have to do," Gonzalez said. "I'm out here to compete and get better."
Wolf did not elaborate on the specific obstacles to reaching an agreement but confirmed that both parties are aware of each other's positions. He indicated that the Week 1 matchup against the Seahawks on September 9 is not being treated as a deadline for the negotiations.
"We're just kind of taking it a day at a time right now. We haven't set a deadline," Wolf said.
When asked about his potential participation in the season opener without a new contract, Gonzalez remained non-committal, stating, "I'm focused on today, on this practice. And we'll see where we go from here."
