New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, but an extension has yet to be agreed upon, with reports suggesting the player has become "a little sensitive" regarding the situation.
Pats reporter Greg Bedard stated on NBCS Boston that while Gonzalez is eligible for a new deal, progress has stalled. Bedard indicated that this sensitivity might be linked to questions the team has about the cornerback, concerns that echo critiques from his 2023 draft process regarding mental toughness.
"Yes, I would say that there’s a little bit of sensitivity," Bedard said, adding that "this was a knock on him coming out, the mental toughness…I would say there’s still a ways to go with the contract."
If no extension is reached before the upcoming season, Gonzalez is slated to earn $2.259 million. This figure contrasts sharply with top cornerbacks such as Trent McDuffie and Sauce Gardner, who are set to make over $30 million.
Patriots training camp is scheduled to begin on July 25. Signs point to Gonzalez potentially not participating if an agreement isn't finalized beforehand. He previously skipped the majority of the voluntary offseason program and only engaged in lower-speed drills during mandatory minicamp.
The team and player face a decision: whether Gonzalez will accept a temporary resolution for his 2026 salary, deferring negotiations to the following offseason when he is scheduled to earn $18.11 million, or if he requires a contract extension now. Recent precedent shows varying timelines for extensions, with players like Derek Stingley Jr. and Sauce Gardner securing lucrative deals before their fourth seasons, while others such as McDuffie, Jaycee Horn, and A.J. Terrell Jr. waited until their fifth year.
