Christian Bale Opens Foster Care Village in Palmdale
The 'Batman' actor spearheaded the creation of "Together California," a $22 million project designed to house and support foster children and siblings.
Actor Christian Bale has channeled his inner Batman to help transform California's foster care system with the opening of "Together California," a $22 million foster care village in Palmdale.
The facility, designed by architectural firm A.C. Martin, officially opened its doors on September 9. It is slated to welcome its first children in October, according to The New York Times.

The village features a central courtyard, gardens, and a community playground, designed to integrate seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood. This approach aims to keep children entering the foster system grounded within their local communities.
At the heart of the village are 12 homes, each licensed to accommodate up to six foster children. These homes are overseen by full-time certified foster parents who receive a paid stipend, according to the project's official website.
The initiative prioritizes placing large sibling groups together, addressing a significant challenge for county caseworkers who often must separate siblings due to a lack of adequate housing. Bale stated that learning that up to three-quarters of children in the foster care system are not placed with their siblings prompted his involvement.
"So when I learned that, I said, ‘All right, we’ve got to do something,’" Bale said.
Each residence is equipped with robust infrastructure, including industrial-sized appliances. Additionally, two studio apartments are available to provide temporary shelter for birth parents working towards family reunification, as well as for transitional-age youth preparing for independent living.
The village will also offer essential resources such as counseling services, tutoring, and parenting classes, which foster youth and local families might otherwise need to travel significant distances to access.
Bale and his partners acquired the 4.67-acre parcel of land in Palmdale in September 2022 for $875,000. The project has garnered substantial public support, including $1.06 million in public funds from the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, a $1.2 million housing grant from the city of Palmdale, and $3 million in county loans, according to The Times.
