Christa Pike Survives Botched Execution, Had Feared 'Worst Nightmare'

Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is in critical condition after her lethal injection execution was called off on Wednesday. Pike, 50, survived the procedure after two attempts to administer the lethal drugs failed, leading officials to rush her to a hospital.

Pike had previously expressed fears that a botched execution would be her "worst nightmare." In a recording made in prison weeks before her scheduled execution, she voiced concerns about the lethal injection method, specifically citing difficulties with finding suitable veins and the qualifications of the physician. She referenced the case of Tony Carruthers, another Tennessee death row inmate whose execution was halted in May due to similar issues with vein access.

"The concerns I have on our lethal injection method are simply that I do not have good veins, and I’m worried about our physician not being qualified to start a central line on me," Pike stated in the recording. "Tony Carruthers lived out my worst nightmare. Detail for detail. And I don’t want to go through that."

Pike was slated to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years. Her lawyers have indicated that she is receiving lifesaving care and may have suffered brain damage during the botched execution.
