Christa Pike Says She Endured Constant Pain After Botched Execution Attempt

Convicted murderer Christa Pike has broken her silence, stating she has experienced constant, severe pain since surviving two botched execution attempts in Tennessee. Pike, 50, was sentenced to death for first-degree murder and was hospitalized after state officials failed to execute her via lethal injection on September 30.

In a statement released after her discharge from the hospital, Pike described her ongoing physical distress. "There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain," she said. "My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak."

Pike expressed distress over the "incompetence" of the procedure, which involved her waking up after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. "I had not contemplated life beyond that night, and I’m deeply hurt by the incompetence that has put so many people in this terrible position," she stated. She also acknowledged the pain of the victim's family, saying, "I continue to think about my victim’s family and the terrible pain and loss they have endured."

She added, "I am recovering, and I know that I am getting stronger. But healing is not the same as being okay." Pike also spoke of the psychological toll of her isolation in the prison's medical ward. "Since that night, I have been largely isolated in the prison’s medical ward, away from other people and the human connections that mean so much to me. That isolation brings its own kind of pain."

During the execution attempt, Pike reportedly cried out about pain in her arm and questioned the process. When taken to the hospital, both her arms were swollen, burned, and blistered. Her attorneys suggested that faulty IV lines may have caused the pentobarbital to be injected into her tissue rather than her bloodstream, comparing the damage to exposure to strong chemicals.

Pike has been incarcerated since 1995 for the beating and stabbing death of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. She returned to the women's prison earlier this month after her hospital stay.
