Christa Pike's Lawyers Announce Prognosis After Botched Execution
Attorneys for Christa Pike state she is alive following a difficult lethal injection process and call for her sentence to be commuted.
Attorneys for Christa Pike announced on Thursday that she remains alive following what they described as a torturous and botched lethal injection attempt at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. The update came during a press conference held by Pike's legal team.
Randy Spivey, an attorney with the Tennessee Office of the Post Conviction Defender who was present at the execution, stated, "Christa is alive. We don't have much of a sense of her prognosis or an update on her health." He characterized the events of Wednesday night as "cruel, and it was torturous. It was also predictable."
Spivey claimed that Pike was injected with seven needles during the procedure, with one needle reportedly bending as it was removed. Pike, 50, had been on death row for 30 years following her 1995 conviction for the murder of her Knoxville Jobs Corp classmate Colleen Slemmer.
Officials reportedly opened the execution chamber curtains at 7:27 p.m. CT on Wednesday, revealing Pike strapped to a gurney. According to witness accounts, Pike made her final statement, saying, "I'm going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life, and that is in love." She described herself as being at peace.
However, Pike remained awake during the process. At one point, she reportedly raised her head and asked prison officials if her arm was supposed to feel a certain way. By 8:26 p.m. CT, witnesses reported that the second dose of pentobarbital had been administered. Pike was heard snoring until the microphone was cut off at 8:53 p.m. CT, at which point witnesses were escorted out. Her attorneys stated that she was subsequently rushed to a hospital by ambulance.
