Christa Pike's Attorneys Claim All-Female Execution Team, Botched Injection

Christa Pike's attorneys believe their client was executed by an all-female team, a request she had made prior to her death. The legal team also stated that the lethal injection procedure was botched, with executioners taking an hour to establish IV lines and potentially injecting the drugs into muscle tissue rather than veins.

Randy Spivey, one of Pike's attorneys, said he observed that the execution team seemed to be composed of women. He indicated that this observation was consistent with Pike's request, as she had reportedly expressed that being put to death by a man would be too traumatizing. Pike, who was convicted of the 1996 murder of roommate Colleen Slemmer, was executed on Thursday.

Another of Pike's lawyers, Stephen Ferrell, commented on the execution's apparent complications. He suggested that the lethal chemicals may not have entered a vein directly, but rather the muscle. Ferrell stated this outcome was consistent with predictions made by their medical experts, who had anticipated difficulties due to Pike's compromised vein condition.

Pike's execution marked a significant moment as she was the first woman on death row in the U.S. to be executed in 2026 and the first woman in history to survive a previous lethal injection attempt. In 1995, she was sentenced to death for the murder of Slemmer, whom she tortured and killed with two accomplices. Pike was 18 at the time of the murder.
