Christa Pike Returns to Prison After Botched Execution Attempt

Death row inmate Christa Pike has returned to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center after being discharged from a hospital where she was treated for complications following a botched lethal injection on September 30. Pike survived two doses of the execution drug pentobarbital, her legal team announced.

Pike is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, where she has been housed for over 30 years, according to a joint statement from her attorneys. The statement did not specify when she was discharged or whether she has fully recovered from conditions previously described by her legal team, including pneumonia, a blood clot, and injuries to her arms.

One of Pike's attorneys, Stephen Ferrell, told BBC Radio 4 that Pike had begun walking in her hospital room but continued to experience arm injuries and memory problems. He added that she was able to walk around her room for the first time on Thursday, more than a week after the execution attempt.

Ferrell also stated that Pike had appeared to be brain dead on Monday evening following the execution attempt but regained consciousness the following morning. Pike was sentenced to death in 1995 for the torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville.

The failed execution has led to legal action, with a Tennessee judge ordering the state Department of Correction to preserve all physical and electronic evidence related to the incident. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has suspended all executions for the remainder of 2026, and it remains unclear if or when the state will attempt to carry out Pike's death sentence again.
