Christa Pike Recovering After Botched Execution, Lawyer Says

Christa Pike, 50, is recovering and has been observed walking in her hospital room following a botched execution attempt on September 30, according to her legal team. Pike, who was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer, survived after Tennessee Department of Corrections officials administered two lethal injections.

Her lawyer, Stephen Ferrell, told the BBC that Pike is "up and walking for the first time today, but just around the room, not very far." He added that while her physical condition has seen improvement, her mental state remains variable, described as "good and bad." Ferrell noted that Pike can lose her train of thought easily and sometimes forgets where she is going.

Pike was scheduled to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries, but instead became the first prisoner in the U.S. to survive a lethal injection. After the procedure, she was initially reported as unconscious and in critical condition when transported from the death chamber at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville to a hospital. By Tuesday, she had regained consciousness.

"She is angry and confused about everything right now. She is very aware that the state tried to execute her," her attorney Randall Spivey told reporters. Pike's legal team claims that two doses of pentobarbital were administered, utilizing at least seven needles, with one reportedly emerging from her arm at a 90-degree angle.

Dr. Joel Zivot, an anesthesiologist consulting for Pike's defense, previously informed the BBC that Pike had been able to communicate in a basic manner after waking up and initially believed it was still September. Despite significant damage to her arms from the execution attempt, Pike reportedly remains handcuffed and shackled to her hospital bed. Her recovery prognosis is uncertain, with expectations of a long recuperation period.
