Christa Pike Awake, Speaking After Botched Execution Attempt

Christa Pike, the convicted murderer whose execution was halted last week, is now awake and speaking, according to her lawyers. Pike, 50, was administered lethal injection drugs on Wednesday and subsequently required hospitalization and a ventilator after the procedure failed to kill her.

Her legal team stated Tuesday that Pike is conscious and receiving critical medical care, though she sustained severe damage to her arms during the execution attempt. "Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery," attorneys said in a statement.

Pike was set to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries. Reports indicate that at least seven needles were used as medical staff attempted to administer two doses of pentobarbital, leaving her arms swollen, burned, and blistered.

Pike was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center following the botched execution at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville. Her lawyers expressed gratitude for the medical staff who they said have provided her with exceptional care.

The incident has led to an independent review of the execution procedures. Tennessee prison chief Frank Strada resigned following the botched execution.
