Chrissy Metz Credits GLP-1 Medication for Unexpected Health Benefits Beyond Weight Loss

Actress Chrissy Metz has revealed that the GLP-1 medication she is using for weight loss has provided unexpected benefits, including reduced inflammation and a quieting of persistent "food noise." Metz, who has lost over 100 pounds, stated that these effects have improved her mobility and mental focus.

The 46-year-old star of "This Is Us" shared that the medication has helped ease concerns about knee issues and has also improved her ability to perform physically demanding tasks. She noted that the reduction in inflammation was particularly beneficial. In addition to these physical advantages, Metz found that the medication has helped her manage symptoms of perimenopause and has given her greater mental capacity to focus on activities other than food.

Metz began exploring GLP-1 medication after experiencing a panic attack on her 30th birthday in 2010, and considering her family history of obesity and perimenopause. She had previously tried various diets and therapies without significant success. Metz expressed initial skepticism about GLP-1 drugs, fearing they might be ineffective or cause uncomfortable side effects. However, upon trying the medication, she found it to be beneficial, enjoying advantages she hadn't anticipated.

She described how the medication helped her shift her relationship with food, moving away from viewing it as something to be vilified. The increased mobility and reduced joint pain have allowed her to perform more easily, such as running around on stage during her role as Angelique in the musical "& Juliet."

Metz emphasized that GLP-1 medication is not a "magic wand" and that she continues to prioritize fitness, working with a trainer to build muscle. Her focus is on feeling strong and comfortable, rather than achieving a specific number on the scale. She also reflected on her past "complicated feelings" about weight loss drugs, acknowledging their potential risks, particularly for individuals with a history of eating disorders, while recognizing their importance for managing conditions like diabetes.

Recalling her father's death from sepsis following gastric bypass surgery, Metz stated her desire to live the longest, healthiest life possible. She has found that the medication has improved her blood work and is helping her proactively manage her health.
